The composition moves between abstraction and realism, with a background of ground graphite mixed with water to create patterns that both support and obscure the figure beneath. The arrangement is not immediately apparent, inviting the viewer to look more closely and gradually discern the relationship between the body, fabric and surrounding marks.

The drapery creates layers of proximity and distance, drawing the viewer towards the figure while simultaneously keeping parts of her hidden. There is a contrast between the softness of the fabric and the weight of the charcoal, between the suggestion of movement and the stillness of the reclining body.

The work continues an exploration of vulnerability, the desire to be seen, and the simultaneous instinct to conceal. The figure is present, yet never entirely revealed. This tension reflects the complexity of feeling close to someone while recognising that there will always be parts of them that remain inaccessible.

This artwork is largest drawing I have ever created, the scale allowed the composition to move beyond a traditional study of the figure, giving the abstract marks, washes and layers of drapery room to develop in their own right.

This artwork is one of one.

See the process of this artwork coming together here
