Enveloped Light

“Enveloped Light” presents a full standing figure with her body turned away from the viewer, while her head rotates back over the left shoulder to meet the audience directly, maintaining an intense visual connection with the viewer. The pose captures her suspended between forward movement and a backward glance, as if navigating the space between past and future.

The grey base of the artwork was created by mixing ground graphite powder with water and brushing it directly into the cotton rag paper. This process forms a sweeping, textured surface that acts as both background and atmosphere for the portrait.

Using her distinctive method of working with ground graphite and charcoal, which she grinds by hand, Carly applies the powders with dry brushes to gradually build the figure and drapery. The technique allows the forms to emerge through subtle tonal transitions, creating the impression of light shaping the body and fabric.

Direct eye contact is uncommon within Carly’s portraits, which makes the gaze in this work particularly striking. The figure appears composed and assured, as though she has reached an understanding with the darker elements surrounding her. Rather than resisting them, she allows them to exist while continuing to move forward with clarity.
