Serenity

“Serenity” focuses on atmosphere, gesture, and the subtle transitions between light and dark. Created with charcoal, graphite, and acrylic ink, the work explores tone and texture through an unconventional approach to charcoal. Rather than relying solely on line, Carly brushes fine charcoal powder directly onto the surface, building the figure through soft layers and diffused marks.

This process allows the form to be rendered almost like a painting, where blurred edges and gentle tonal shifts replace hard outlines. The result is a figure that gradually emerges from the paper, giving the drawing a soft, dreamlike quality.

Beneath the drawing, an abstract acrylic base has been laid across the paper. Carly works over this surface while allowing fragments of the acrylic ground to remain visible, letting areas of colour and texture subtly emerge through the figure.

The nude woman, loosely draped with fabric, leans away from the viewer in a soft, contemplative pose. The hazy edges and careful study of anatomy create a sense of stillness and depth, as though the figure is slowly dissolving from light into shadow.
